Description
The CTS MK5 2.0T Direct Fit FMIC Kit is designed as a drop in replacement for the OEM front mounted intercooler (FMIC). That means you can install this kit without any trimming or modification of the bumper. The OEM FMIC is adequate for stock boost levels, however once boost levels are increased by way of ECU upgrades/chipping the OEM FMIC struggles to keep the charged air temperatures in check. Higher charged air temperatures can result in boost cut and timing pull, both reducing the amount of power your vehicle produces.
The CTS direct fit FMIC uses a high efficiency bar and plate intercooler core, which aids in reducing pressure drop. Reducing pressure drop means that your turbo will not have to work as hard to make a given level of boost. If your turbo makes 30psi of boost pressure in the turbocharger, and your intercooler has a 10psi pressure drop then the boost measured by your ECU would be (30psi - 10psi) = 20psi. With an efficient FMIC like the CTS direct fit FMIC your turbo does not have to work as hard to reach desired boost levels. This is beneficial in two ways, the turbo life expectancy is increased due to more efficient operation, and boost leaving the turbocharger is cooler and more dense resulting in more power to the ground.

This FMIC is the best!!!
I upgraded from the K03 to a K04, and subsequent APR stage 2+ tune/K04 tune.
My oem/stock intercooler was good for about ONE hard pull, then it was horribly heatsoaked.
I purchased, (and never used), an R style intercooler from Germany. Received it. LOTS thicker then the OEM one,
but I figured, what the hey. If I'm going to go thru the hassle of replacing the intercooler, I might as well buy/get the best.
The CTS FMIC is absolutely a work of art. Again, MOST Of the spendy parts I"ve got on the car are all HIDDEN.
Fitment was perfect. Granted, you have to remove the front end of the car, but you pretty much have to do that with anything you do in/and/around the intercooler/radiator/a/c,
etc.
Only thing I found amiss was the washers CTS sends that mount the radiator, and a/c condenser to the FMIC, were a bit small for my application. N big. I ran to wallyworld (only
thing that was open at the time), and found some larger washers.
After install, took car out, and beat the bejeebus out of it. it was about a 90 HOT and HUMID day. NO sign, whatsoever of heatsoak. None.
My only other concern/thought, was it had a bit of turbo lag, now, where before it was absolutely instantaneous. (shock)…...HUGE diff in INSIDE of CTS FMIC, compared to
oem.
Highly recommend this mod, if you're experiencing ANY kind of heatsoak. Besides the fact, that it's cooler'n hell. Literally.
Biggest shame, is it's all hidden behind the grille/a/c condenser. Love it!!!
And, add to the fact that ModdedEuros HAD IT IN STOCK, AND SENT IT OUT TO ME INSTANTLY! -
CTS FMIC
Quality on this piece is outstanding. I had previously purchased a FMIC out of an R version. MUCH heftier than the teensie one IN my car, (OEM).
I decided IF I was going to go thru the hassle of replacing the intercooler, I might as well get a GOOD one.
Well, total time to R&R it was about 4.5 hours. That included running to my local Walmart for BIGGER washers for mounting the radiator and a/c condenser
to the FMIC.
Only thing I found a bit twinky about the setup. At least on MY setup, (2013 vw beetle 2.0 tsi turbo/K04).
The washers that come with the FMIC were too small. If utilized, they would've pulled thru (along with the allen head bolts, thru the attachment points on both the
radiator, and the a/c condenser. So I just went and got some larger diameter ones. Blue loctited everything together, and done done.
Fitment is EXCELLENT. MUCH heavier, (like probably 4 times heavier then OEM intercooler.
I took car out and did some excessive beating (and it was HOTTER'n hades outside/humid as hell too). FMIC worked outstanding!!!
Can't wait to get car to the track and see what it does now.
Highly recommend this FMIC!!!!!
CTS rocks!!!
