Description

The APR Intake System lets your engine breathe! This closed design rejects power-robbing heat from the engine bay thanks to the high heat deflection material used in the intake's design. It provides an unrestrictive path for cold, dense air fed from outside of the engine bay to maximize power. We use a high flow filter that provides excellent filtration without the restrictions, which keeps the engine clean while optimizing power delivery. On the flow bench, we recorded a 31% increase in CFM over the factory airbox, and a 24% increase over the total system. This translates to a sharper throttle response, lessened strain on the turbocharger, and more horsepower and torque. The system is an excellent value. It installs in minutes, looks fantastic, delivers a sporty engine note, and is recommended at all stages of performance.

The APR Intake System is modular. It connects to the factory turbo inlet piping, and provides substantial gains. Those looking to complete the system can opt for the optional APR Turbo Inlet pipe to increase flow over the smaller factory turbo inlet piping. Our inlet pipe is a continuous massive pipe that connects to the turbocharger via a port-matching silicon coupler. The PCV system conveniently connects to the intake via a billet aluminum adapter. Lastly, the system uses a flex coupler that allows adequate engine movement and flex.

  • Fits perfectly, except for the gap that allows hot air to get sucked in, but I fixed it

I just purchased and installed this system. Everything fit perfectly and the install instructions were clear and helpful, even though they are not exactly specific to my 2014 Jetta SE 1.8T. You can easily figure out the extra hose connection for the APR Gen 3 Hose Adapter (1.8 TSI & 2.0 TSI EA888 Gen 3), which is not shown in the instructions.

Only complaint was the 1/4" plus gap between the APR intake and the cold air plenum in the front grill. Same complaint as the other review. Seems like a cold air intake should only take in outside air, right?
I found a different fix for it than the other review (their idea is sound, but I didn't have any foam handy that I trusted to survive automotive use).
I used the existing stock intake piece, and cut off the plenum portion with a keyhole saw (whatever plastic cutting tools you have would also work).
I filed and rounded and cleaned the edges, and put the new piece back in to create a tunnel to the APR intake.

Pros of the mod: It can only get air from outside the engine bay.

Cons of the mod: It technically makes for a slightly smaller intake cross sectional surface area, and doesn't take advantage of the "bell" inlet of the APR airbox, but I did not notice any negative effects, even under full acceleration even at lower speeds.

Maybe it's my imagination or wishful thinking, but it does seem to spool up a tiny touch faster than before.
What is NO:T my imagination is that with a stage 1 APR reprogramming for 91 octane, I was getting as high as 13.2 psi boost (as measured by P3 gauge that mounts in an air vent - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED https://www.p3gauges.com/). Now I'm seeing as high as 14.5 psi boost. That got to be good for a few more ponies, right?

Also, I can now hear the blow-off valve! I can't really hear the turbo spooling though.

I'm super happy with the plastic version (right price), since this mod is mostly for the sound anyway, rather than performance increases with just a stage 1 reprogramming.

  • New GTI Owner

I anxiously waited for this part to deliver for my "new" 2014 GTI MK6 gen 2.0 turbo. I gave this part only two stars because the unit did not fit perfectly to the car. The instructions said to remove the air inlet bracket that fit with the factory air box. But when securing the new intake to it. There was a gap between the intake and the inlet. Also, neither bracket was lining up either. Air intakes are supposed to be gap-free to maximize air intake. Luckily Im not new to mods and realized I had 1/4 inch door insulation tape laying around. I added two layers of the tape the the housing of the intake and another layer to the inlet on the car. The surface on the car portion wasn't flat. Thankfully the tape had strong adhesive. So once I got the
inlet in and joined the two not only did I eliminate the gap. But it also aligned the two brackets. The only exception to the foam tape was that I could only use one of the two screws to secure to the housing to the bracket that was included in the kit. After torquing everything down I started my car. I heard excessing air vacuum. When I looked in the engine compartment I forgot there was an additional hose that came off the factory air box. The instructions don't I dictate what to do with it. So I'm just going to leave it alone for now in case I need to reinstall the factory air box come smog time.
